Authors & Staff

Halbrook has always been small. At its largest the company employed nine people, four of whom wrote the books they were editing.

Marguerite Vane
Founder · Series editor

Co-founded Halbrook in 1994 after eighteen years teaching primary English in Northamptonshire. Series editor for all eight volumes and author of Volumes 2 and 8. Still opens the post on Tuesdays.

Douglas Hale
Founder · Author, Volumes 1, 3, 4

Co-founder. Taught science and geography for twenty-two years and wrote the three volumes nobody else wanted to write. Retired from the board in 2005.

E. R. Sable
Author, Volumes 5, 6, 7

Biographical information is not held by this office. Correspondence with the author was conducted by post, care of a forwarding address that has since been closed. The author’s contract required that the name appear exactly as given and that no photograph be printed.

All three Sable titles are set from the author’s own typescript. Volume 7 was withdrawn in 2004.

Prudence Okafor
Illustrator

Illustrated Volumes 3 to 8, including the five dice on the cover of Volume 6, which she has said were drawn from a set belonging to her grandfather and which she declined to redraw when the printer complained about the orange.

Nathan Fell
Copy editor, 1999–2004

Responsible for the corrections sheet and, by his own account, for most of the things on it. Left the company in November 2004. The errata page carries his initials in the stylesheet to this day; nobody has felt able to remove them.

The board
Editorial

Five members between 1994 and 2006. Minutes were kept in a ledger at Mereway Road and are not public. One vote in November 2004 was recorded as dissenting at the author’s insistence.
